Ademola Adekoya, spokesman of the Lagos State University #LASU, says the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has no business with the admission modalities in the institution.

Adekoya said this in a telephone conversation with TheCable while reacting to the admission racketeering allegation raised by the union against top officials of the university.

In a letter dated October 15, 2018, ASUU-LASU alleged that staff in the “highest offices within the university” are involved in the racketeering where names of applicants who scored below cut-off marks were injected into the admission list.

#Adekoya, however, said there was no secrecy in the admission process as rules and regulations were followed in selecting applicants.

“Well, I have not seen the letter written by ASUU. What is the business of #ASUU with the modalities for admission?” he asked.

“Is there any standard rule that ASUU should be part of the way admission is done? There is no secrecy. #Admission is done based on the standard #JAMB has recommended. We are complying with all the rules and regulations. Why is it only ASUU that is raising issues?

“Admission actually starts from departments to faculties and then to the central level. Departments were the ones that shortlisted students that were taken on merit and that has been submitted to the admission office for onward submission to JAMB, which has been done.

“There is also admission by discretion. It is done at the vice chancellor’s discretion. We have considered the policy of Lagos state that 70 per cent for indigenes and 30 per cent for non-indigenes and that has been complied with.

“If you go to JAMB, look for the criteria for how they do the admission. There’s catchment area which has been considered by the university.

“The discretion will be done by the vice chancellor. If the Lagos state government brings in a list, that will come as discretion and nobody can query the visitor. That doesn’t mean we admit applicants that are not qualified. So, I don’t know the secrecy they are talking about.”
